Frequently Asked Questions

  • I bought my appliance before March 1st. Can I still get the rebate?
Only appliances purchased on or after the program start date of March 1, 2010 are eligible for the rebate.
  • The store had to order my appliance and it won't be here for days/weeks. Can I send in my application now without a serial number to hold my place for the rebate money?
No. Applications cannot be processed and approved if they are incomplete.
  • Why is the serial number necessary?
A serial number ensures an actual appliance exists behind the rebate application. This helps protect retailers from rejected orders and ensures the same appliance can't be claimed for more than one rebate.
  • Do I have to submit a separate rebate application for each appliance?
The form allows you to include more than one appliance on the same form. You may submit more than one form if when needed, such as making purchases at different times. Just make sure it is postmarked within 30 days of purchase.
  • If I fill out the application incorrectly, will it be denied?
Not necessarily. We will try to contact you to get the information needed to complete processing. If we cannot reach you, or the information is unavailable, the application will be considered incomplete and denied.
  • Why isn't there a rebate for clothes dryers?
There are no Energy Star qualified residential clothes dryers. An explanation is available here at the Energy Star website.
  • Why isn't there a rebate for oven/range/stove?
There are no Energy Star qualified residential ovens/ranges/stoves at this time, as noted on the Energy Star website.
  • Why isn't there a rebate for electric storage water heaters?
There are no Energy Star qualified electric storage water heaters. An explanation is available here at the Energy Star website.
  • I live in South Dakota, but it's closer for me to go to a town in a neighboring state to buy the appliance. Will it be eligible for rebate?
Yes. The purchase location does not affect eligibility. However, rebates will only be mailed to South Dakota addresses.
  • I live in another state, but have another home or rental in South Dakota. Can you send me the rebate here?
Rebates will be mailed only to South Dakota addresses.
  • We just built a new house and bought new appliances. Can we get a rebate for those appliances?
Rebates are available only for residential purchases that replace existing appliances. A new appliance that does not replace an existing appliance is not eligible for a rebate.
  • I have a duplex/4-plex/apartment building. Can I get rebates for replacing appliances in those units?
You cannot receive more than one rebate per appliance type. So you would be eligible for one rebate for each appliance, whether in a rental or in your personal residence.
  • Why is proof of disposal required for a refrigerator or freezer rebate?
These appliances contain a coolant that is regulated by law and must be properly drained for disposal or recycling.
  • Who pays for the disposal of the old appliance?
Consumers are often responsible for the cost of disposal. In some cases the retailer will remove and dispose of the appliance for you, which may include additional charge.
  • I heard/read there were rebates for furnaces and air conditioners. Is that true?
Some states may offer rebates for those items, but South Dakota does not. Each state set up their own program, and has rebates for different appliances and different amounts. You can find descriptions of the state rebate programs here on the Energy Star website
  • As long as I send my application within 30 days, I'll get the rebate, right?
The availability of funds for rebates is not guaranteed. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the funds are gone, no more rebates will be issued.
  • How long will the rebate funds last?
It all depends on how many applications are received, and how soon they are received. The sooner you submit your application, the better your chances of funds still being available.
  • How will I know how much rebate funds are left?
The amount remaining for rebates will be updated each business day on this website. News releases will also be issued as funds near their end and when the program ends.
